Meet Nelson Choong

roarengineering Articles, Codes Standards & Guidelines, Structural Engineering

Nelson is a graduate of McMaster University who is eager to advance his career in forensic engineering. We have welcomed him into our team of experts and are thrilled to have him on board! Here are some questions we asked Nelson so you could know him a little better:

Q – Where are you from / where did you grow up? Any stories from your past that you’d like to share?
A – Mississauga, born and raised!

Q – Where did you study (university, college etc)?
A – I studied civil engineering at McMaster University.

Q – What do you do/what are you passionate about and why did you choose to do what you do? Any unknown facts about your line of work?
A – I am in the field of forensic structural engineering. Essentially, I investigate structures and buildings that have suffered a disaster, evaluate the extent of the damages, and come up with a practical way to repair or replace them. I choose to do what I do because I’ve always had a fascination with buildings and how they work, and being in this line of work lets me do precisely that.

I think an unknown fact about this line of work is the whole process that takes place whenever an insurance claim is submitted. I think most people (myself included before I started in this field) simply file a claim with their insurance company then forget about it until the repairs are finished or they get paid, but there is actually a lot that goes on behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. My job is a part of that. It’s very much behind the scenes.

Q – What you’re looking forward to doing or learning at Roar.
A – Looking forward to getting more experience in this field and eventually getting my P.Eng when the time comes.

Q – What TV show are you watching right now?
A – Game of Thrones! This past season has been phenomenal. It was about time we saw dragons in Westeros.

Q – A quote you live by
A – I honestly can’t think of one haha. I don’t think I have one.
